July 16, 2020: from middle to older adulthood, self-esteem declines because we may be experiencing age-related emotions. Parenting: parenting type causes people to have high or low self-esteem, give children value and freedom to experience things and have autonomy generally is authoritative parenting. Terror management theory: self-esteem allows us to think of someone with value and reduces this anxiety, having high self-esteem reduces existential tread, buffers social rejection against the social rejection, ex. Low self-esteem indicates the risk of being excluded which has dire consequences in terms of evolution: self-esteem helps us against social rejection. Increases goal striving: ability to evaluate self is important for achieving goals we have what it takes to achieve goal. July 16, 2020: people with low self-esteem have less motivation to fulfill goals. Subjects were randomly assigned to self-esteem and threat conditions: after receiving the personality feedback, and before the video, subjects were asked a series of questions regarding their reactions to the feedback.
