PSY325H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Eugenius Warming, Suicidal Ideation, Confirmation Bias
Document Summary
Function of con rmation bias: information about self-views will be processed in a biased manner to support those views, it is primarily done non-consciously. These distinct forms may often be implemented sequentially: people may rst strive to locate partners who verify one or more self-views. If this fails, they may redouble their efforts to elicit veri cation. Failing this, they may strive to see more self-veri cation than actually exists. Alternatively, instead of the social world noticing a change, perhaps the person themselves decide it is time for change - self-view may be dysfunctional or obsolete and then a person can decide to change herself/himself. Self-veri cation: it is about proving that you are who you perceive you are. Self-improvement is the act of bettering one"s self-concept. It is the physical manifestation of the self-enhancement motive - the act of attaining desired positive self-views.
