What is the theory-experimental evidence to support- what it predicts. Self- think of ourselves as an objects. Personality- what you are actually like, we could measure it, maybe a reality. Self- is how you conceptualize yourself, perceptions, construction of who you are. William james: self as knower-i- kind of like observer, self as known- me, can be different me"s like who you are at home vs at school. Knowledge: use self for introspection, to guide your behavior, make decisions, perspective taking. Interpersonal: close relationships, self-presentation, over confidence can be helpful in short term bec self confidence maybe seen as competence. Emotion: pride, shame, what makes people do good/ bad things so you may not commit bad behaviors to avoid guilt. People tend to encode info differently depending on the level of self implicated info- memory of self related material is better remembered. Such as birthdays closer to yours, peoples name similar to yours.
