Learning to control the parasympathetic system helps regulate the sympathetic system i. e. helps you to relax during a test or workout so you aren"t hyper-aroused. Autonomic nervous system is activated within seconds. Ex. being jump scared, you realize who it is and the threat is dealt with you don"t need to activate the hpa axis. Hans selye mice were unable to excrete enough cortisol in response to stress, so they died. Inflammatory response through immune system cells that rise to the skin in case the person gets injured. Different in people with depression depending on whether they have catatonic (low cortisol) or psychoactive (high cortisol) depression. Benadryl dries up mucous membranes and makes you more likely to get sick.
