Lecture 9: young offenders: youth criminal justice act, ages 12-17 is 10% of the population responsible for 30% of all property offenses and 15% of all violent offenses. Youth criminal justice act: 2003 youth criminal justice act (jcja, movement to keep youth out of court and out of custody, extra judicial measures- more police discretion and attempts to divert youth from the justice system, eg. Assessment of young offenders: consent from parents and assent or agreement from the child are not mandatory when a court as ordered an assessment, but clinicians will often try to get consent and assent before commencing. Internalizing vs. externalizing problems: internalizing problems are emotional difficulties, eg. Childhood psychiatric diagnoses: adhd, inattention features- forgetful, easily distracted, can"t finish tasks, hyperactivity features- fidgets, runs and climbs at inappropriate times and settings, talks excessively, impulsivity features- interrupts, has difficulty waiting, blurts out responses.
