Document Summary

Lecture 6: psychology of the law profiling. The idea behind profiling is simple based on what a person does, we can infer what the person is like (via behavioural tendencies and demographic features) How should we interview/interrogate to get a confession profiling is an investigatory tool; therefore, not used to convict someone just to apprehend. Note: mostly profiling is used in homicides and also rape crimes. George metesky (investigator of the mad bomber man setting bombs in many places like movie theatre; believed that he would escalate behavior. ) Dr. james brussel (psychiatrist) looked at letters gathered from crime scene and created the first profile using evidence and talking to investigator. Profile: single, heavy set but cared about appearance, middle aged, living in connecticut with female relative, immigrant (foreign born), self-educated, roman-catholic, paranoid (this was his motivation), would where double breasted jacket when being caught. Dr. brussel was called in for boston strangler case, but profile was way off.
