Closed institutions: psychiatric wards, always a last resort for those who cannot be anywhere else. Long term group homes: residential home that could be in any neighbourhood, this makes it easier for these people to be integrated in the community. Enables individuals to move out of their parent"s care. Works only if there is cohesion in the group home, if the staff works well, if there have proper day programs. Staff has to be well trained and individuals are chosen appropriately. On the other hand, they are often under staffed, under resourced, they have little community integration. Communities don"t want to have them in their neighbourhoods. People are afraid about the behavior of the individual"s in the group homes, people have stereotypes about these people, they often don"t let the individuals roam outside.
