Advocacy has always been for removing barriers-the deaf community is building them. When they say no to oralism, they segregate themselves by only using sign language. They fear that asl will die out if children are given cochlear implants. Some approaches: cued speech: spoken english and hand signs that enable a deaf person to distinguish between similar lip movements with different meanings. The signs are more phonetic sounds than semantic. It takes less time than asl. the deaf community hates it though. They see it as a way to smuggle in english. Deaf kids are still forced to pronounce words they cannot hear. It can be an effective method in teaching but the problem is people don"t become proficient in either language, they can only lip read when people use cued speech.
