PSY345H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Tourette Syndrome, Speech Disorder, Nonverbal Communication
Document Summary
Communication is one of the most complicated and vital processes we undertake, yet we seldom think about it unless there is a problem. If somebody has a small deficit in the ability to walk or to talk, we tend to notice it right away. Communication is the interchange of ideas, opinions or facts between people (senders and receivers). Some components of communication involve language but not speech. Speech is only the audible representation of language, however that is not the only way that we communication with one another, e. g. sign language, texting, writing are examples of language, not speech. Speech is one means of expressing language but not the only one. Non-verbal communication such as body language is important. Language represents the message that is contained in speech. In humans, the development of communication, language and speech overlap to some degree.
