The branching is what stands out in the differentiation of a newborn and 6 yr old brain. Newborn brain is fully functional, but lacking. Pet scans give a fuzzy idea of the tremendous amount of development taking place in a brain. Maturation does not always reflect growth; but rather, refinement! As you approach puberty this beings to slow down.
