Across different species all modalities are used for communication. Comunication in the african elephant: elephants can recognize each other by voice. Perhaps all species of animals use some form of communication. Communication is transmission of info from 1 animal to another in a manner beneficial for signaling animal. Bees dance when they found nectar communicate how far and which direction to fly in. Complex communication in other species: chimps: use hand gestures, facial features can also learn sign language complex + flexible. Communication can also be heritable (fiddler crabs wave claws to attract f) Elephants create rumbles" so low in pitch hard for humans to hear other elephant friends exchange rumbles during reunions & each f has a distinct rumble suggest. Intentional just means that the purpose of transmission was communication. Intentional can be in terms of evolutionary or adaptive sense (peacock tail feathers) Point of intention is whether the communication signal was meant for receiver or not.
