The adult state is where there are sounds that are acoustically distinct but we don"t actually classify them as meaningful differences. A mature perceptual stem is one that has the ability to differentiate between sounds that are meaningful in your language. To talk about this, we have to rst introduce the idea of continuum. There"s speech sounds that we hear in our heads that sound vastly different but only really differ by a matter of degree (i. e. may differ just by timing) We somehow hear these differences in degree as differences in categories. To be able to turn this into an experiment is where you have a discrimination task where you just formalize what we did initially and plot their success in that ability. What we see typically is that people"s score on being able to discriminate the squares is pretty high in all cases.
