Group, family, couple therapies Lecture Nov 18 2013 - Push away thoughts, sensations Interpersonal (how to maintain relationships) - GIVE o Gentle (not verbally attract), interested (ask follow up questions), validate (show empathy), easy manner (anxious around people they care about, learn to be comfortable). - FAST: loose sense of self o Fair, apologize (don’t keep apologizing over and over again), stick with your values, truthful (don’t lie). - ACCEPTS o Things we do to distract ourselves from intense emotions  Sensation: holding ice cube instead of cutting - GIVE o How to positively connect with others - FAST o Keep self-respect and don’t lose themselves in others DBT effectiveness: - Gold standard for borderline - Common factors - Different from CBT o Acceptance and mindfulness of thoughts/emotions o DBT recognizes more predispositions, biological o Borderline: emotional dysregulation and change through behavior  DBT: focus more on emotion regulation  CBT: change thoughts, change how people feel o Extremely taxing: intense therapy o DBT vs. CBT on test?
