PSY345 Controversial Debates and Psychosocial Perspectives (1) - Moral superiority of our times o We are really confident we do things better today than before o We have legislation to guarantee the rights of people with disabilities o But we’re not quite where we’d like to be  Where everybody has personhood/citizenship/equal access to everything society has to offer o Freak Show  Freak – something that doesn’t fit with society, it’s provocative  People are willing to pay to go see it  Anything that is really different in such a way that people are going to pay to see them  Don’t allow them  unfair to take advantage of someone’s “misery” and pay to see someone else’s misfortune  Ethically wrong  At least individuals were able to make a living  Employment o Today, not allowing them to work  Replaced it with a disability pension o Doesn’t work, lives at home, prevents them from being just like everyone else  Question whether they’ve been cancelled  Still have them  Still have other freak shows on TV - Value of life o Human rights didn’t protect minorities in the same way as it did the majority o Looking at human life globally  It is not equal  Within countries as well o Robert Latimore  Murdered his daughter, she had oxygen deprivation, developed cerebral palsy  Mercy killing  He made the determination himself  No legislation  Reduced sentence  Gave the dad the right to decide the value of his life  According to human rights  Nobody has that authority to make a determination about somebody else’s life o Steps/Cognitive Process we use to Justify [the actions of Robert Latimore]  1. Most people cannot imagine how they would cope if they acquired a severe impairment  2. The result of that – society labels the impairment a tragic case  3. The desire to continue living under such tragic circumstances is comprehensible o Human rights do not protect all minorities Controversial Debates and Psychosocial Perspectives (2) - Medicine presents itself as value free but is it? o See medicine as an extension of science  Better the lives of individuals by providing them with cures o Scientific eradication of disability  Science is promoting the notion that their lives are not worth living  Is it possible to eradicate disability?  No o There will always be acquired disability  Ex. through accidents  Ex. related to aging process, neurological problems PSY345  Dementia, Alzheimer’s o We’re producing a society that doesn’t accept disability  Looks down at it o Objectifying gaze  When patients become passive, it causes emotional damage  When emotional damage is caused, prognosis (likelihood of speedy recovery is lower) o Playing god  Medical profession deciding who will live/who won’t live  Not value free  Play god at the beginning/end of life  The more premature the child is born, greater risk factor for all sorts of disabilities o Now we can enable that child to survive [contrary to nature]  But now they may have a disability o Eugenics o Amniocentesis  Whether or not they’ll be likely to have a child with a disability  Whether to terminate the pregnancy or not  The parent’s decision/values  Genetic counselling  Problem that disability groups have with it:  Used to know not just for detecting a disability but to know the gender of the child, buying kids online  Can decide to abort the child based on finding what their gender is o Once we develop these technologies that tell us about these babies before they’re born  Keep on getting woman pregnant, and picking and choosing waiting until you have the child you want  ETHICAL CONCERN  Medicine as a gate keeper of public funds  Going to a doctor to get access to services/resources o Determined by culture/society/law o Doctor is the gatekeeper to these resources o Not going there anymore just to get better Controversial Debates and Psychosocial Perspectives (3) - Social Construction of disability: o Where is disability located? o Disability: experience the person has as the result of an impairment [broken legs]  Rather than the actual aspect of the part of the body that’s broken o Does impairment leads to disability?
