Gursikh is the existence of a guru/master and a sikh/disciple relationship: Sikhism initially referred to this bond, which is established not only though belief but also an enunciation ritual without this you are really not part of the sikh religion. Taking amrit means you are part of it. Being sikh means you have a ritually created bond with your master. Following the religious practices, sympathizing, etc. can happen without amrit, but you are not. Amrit has to come from an authority a legitimate one (this is a traditionalist perspective). The legitimate authority: 1) the sacred granth 2) the panth (which had a head there is a chain/hierarchy; head validates the ritual). A gurdawara which is associated with the original lineage.
