RLG207H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Jataka Tales, Rebab, Janamsakhis
Document Summary
Class 3: sikh scriptures, the adi granth (as guru granth sahib) and other texts. Still warfare going on at the time of nanak"s birth. Go from one man to community of disciples to final human guru and installation of the final guru in 200 years. A stick by which you measure things. Some texts inserted into an official collection, while others left out. Guruship tends to go from father to son in hinduism. Sikhism -> not like this in the beginning. Sometimes to grand nephew, or someone else. Most gurus designate a successor before their death. Nanak does this, others do the same. Equalizes people, all eat together, feed everyone, everyone seated together. Son has to take stance, to consolidate the community. Contrast with nanak, who seems to oppose war. Community needs military power to strengthen itself at this time. Cumulative process from many gurus and other works incorporated. First generation dying, those who lived at the time of nanak.
