The only realities we know, the illusions created by the mass media are as persuasive as religion was. 40% of our time is spent interacting with the mass media. Mass media (mass communications) print, radio, television & other communication technologies that reach many people. Communication via the mass media is usually one way, few senders, many receivers. Newspaper was the dominant form of mass medium until the 1950s. Long-distance communication required physical transportation (horse, ship, etc. ) until 1844 when the first telegraphy was sent. Causes of media growth: the protestant reformation. Martin luther wanted people to develop a more personal relationship with the bible. His new form of christianity, called protestantism established in half of europe, encouraged people to read. The bible became the first mass media product in the west & the bestselling book.
