Prejudice= judging a person on their groups real or fake characteristics. Discrimination= unfair treatment of people because of their group membership. Scapegoat= disadvantaged person that others blame for their problems. Ex) germans blamed jews for economic troubles after ww1. The circle of racism: physical markers, social conditions= differences in behaviour (energetic vs. lazy, behaviour diff= create stereotypes, remain in culture. Affect peoples behaviours less than thought to. Culture has little effect on economic success. Ex)praise koreans for strong family values, family, education, hard work. In reality they were literate, skilled, financial assets. Saw less prejudice & discrimination b/c of success. Vertical mosaic= ethnically & racially stratified society (low mobility- porter) New era, race maters less, encourages mobility. Labelling someone as italian canadian created an identity of who they were. Symbolic interactionist= negotiation of labels between insiders/ outsiders. Symbolic ethnicity= patriotism of immigrant generation, not daily. Racism= visible characteristics of a group (skin colour) show inferiority & justifies discrimination.
