The sum practices, languages, symbols, beliefs, values, ideologies, and material objects that people create to deal with real-life problems. Passed on from one generation to the next. Society is made up of people, culture is made up of ideas, behaviours and material possessions. Socialization is a way to pass on culture. Culture is: shared, learned, taken for granted: there is no such thing as the correct way to live. The main idea is that it is a tool kit, we develop cultures to survive, and we act in certain ways because they encouraged our survival: symbolic, varies across time and place. Symbols: languages and signifiers, math is also a type of language. Sapir-whorf thesis: we interact, develop concepts about one world, and then make a la(cid:374)guage to a(cid:396)ti(cid:272)ulate (cid:272)o(cid:374)(cid:272)epts.
