A societies hierarchical ranking of people into social classes, we are all on a rung of a ladder. Income (money from a job), wealth (assets), occupational prestige, years of schooling. Values and attitudes: rich tend to be more liberal. Family: middle class have equal gender roles and share resources, rich have smaller families and friends with shared hobbies, working class have traditional gender roles. We have choice that is constrained by family background. Movement up or down stratification system: meritocracy- belief that those with merit (talent, effort) will succeed. Stratification is persistent over time, passed across generations: ex. Middle class parents, very likely to have middle class children. There is a legacy but you can go up or down the ladder. Important jobs are payed well to attract talented people: ex. Jobs are more important than others, and require lots of training.
