Deviance- breaking a norm (folkways, mores, taboos) that evokes a negative reaction from others: crime- breaking a law. Deviance and crime are socially defined, depend on context, are not characteristics of individuals or actions. Mild sanctions on face-to-face basis: violation of a norm that is not important, ex. Varies depending on seriousness of the norm. Strain: values goals but cannot acquire the means to get them: turns into crime. Innovators: people want the goals but are not using legitimate means to get them. Conformist: working hard to achieve goals: ex. Mark cuban used legitimate means to get to where he is, jayz did not: cuban is conformist, jayz is innovator. Rich and powerful impose labels and punishment onto others. Rich and powerful escape labels and punishment: ex. Hire lawyers to defend themselves: they can influence if their behaviour is defined as criminal. Crime is rewarding, if we knew we could get away with it, we would all be criminal.
