Metatheory: grand theories that are not testable, a way of looking at and interpreting reality. Human behaviour is governed by staple patterns of social relations (macro-level theory) Shows of structures maintain or undermine social stability (structural functionalism) - law, education etc. Social structures are based mainly on shared values. Re-establishing equilibrium is the best way to solve social problems (shared values and norms) Function: consequence of a social pattern for the operation of society. Manifest function: intended consequence of a social pattern. Latent function: unintended consequence of a social pattern. Dysfunction: social pattern that disrupts the operation of society. Focuses on large, macro-level structures like class relations.
