Sociology is the systematic study of human behaviour in a social context. Suicide rates and rates of psychological disorder did not vary directly. Durkheim argued that varied results were due to differences in the degree of social solidarity. Social solidarity is the degree to which group members share beliefs and values, and the intensity and frequency of their interaction. Values ideas about what is good and bad, right and wrong. Durkheim expected high solidarity groups had lower suicide rates than low solidarity groups. (more/ Higher social solidarity= more anchored to social world and therefore less likely to take their lives. ) Married couples are less likely to commit suicide than unmarried adults. Social structures are relatively stable patterns of social relations. Sociological imagination is the quality of mind that enables one to see the connection between personal troubles and social structures.
