Occurs when people act in unison to bring about or resist social, political, and economic change. Collective attempts to change all or part of the political or social order by means of rioting, petitioning, striking, demonstrating, and establishing pressure groups, unions, and political parties. Functionalism: conflict, breakdown, disruption of social organization. Strain, marginality some things people expect in society which they are not getting: all about resources so fighting or conflict over resources and resource mobilization. Police, censorship, negative media portrayal, government tries to bring on the leader of the social movement as an advisor. First scenario because the first workers have more resources. Interest, goals, values, ideology: reaching out, stretching objectives, modify objectives, make them softer so people are more likely to buy. New social movements: broader goals that effect all humanity, highly educated, well-to-do membership, globalized. Global warming: gradual worldwide increase in average surface temperature, one of the major contemporary social movements.
