What determines gender?
Sex- depends on what you’re born with
Gender- is culturally and socially constructed dierences between males and
females found in the meanings, beliefs and practices associated with femininity and
masculinity
Gender Identity-Identi#cation with or sense of belonging to a particular sex
(biologically, psychologically, socially)
Ambiguity
Gender Ideologies- set of ideas about what constitutes appropriate masculine and
feminine roles and behaviours
Heteronormativity- holds that heterosexuality is normal and assumes an
alignment between biological sex, gender identity and gender roles
Intersex- variation in sex characteristic that do not allow distinct sex identi#cation
(Heterosexual)
Transgendered- break social norms by defying gender distinctions (Homosexual)
Transsexual- alter their gender, believe they were born in the wrong body
(bisexual)
Sexual Orientation
-nature vs nurture (Christians thought you can undo it)
-environmental factors ( availability of sex partners, early experiences, jail, culture
-sexual orientation cannot be changed and eorts to change it do not work and it is
harmful, thus if it were nurture it could be changes, thus it is nature aka normal
People identify as heterosexuals, but they fantasize about other of opposite sex, or
have had
