Welfare state: tax and redistribution. Absolute or relative, income or consumption. Strain from devoting a higher proportion of income (+63%) to necessities. People are poor because they don"t want to work. Most poor people are immigrants. Most poor people are trapped in poverty. Employed not welfare; disability; childcare; minimum wage; (want to work) Only recent immigrants; small proportion; long- term lower poverty rate. Fluid; most escape in less than a year; effort to move out of poverty. Western european countries; wage standards, child care, benefits; commodification. Inequality is needed to motivate people. No one wants to be poor, fact that you can potentially be poor is good motivation. Inequality benefits the rich and powerful. The government should not provide jobs or basic income.
