Document Summary

Society is the people, culture is how we think, how we act and what we own. (ideas, objects, production) Culture is shared and taken for granted. The way we are taught to live (there"s no best or worst). It is symbolic, learned and varies across time and place. *culture has 3 main tools (tool/survival kit): abstraction, cooperation and production. Language (sapir-whorf theory edward sapir and benjamin lee whorf) We develop concepts about things we learn. We use/develop language to articulate these concepts. Language then influences how you view the world (ex. Key in german is masculine (heavy, hard jagged) where as in spanish it is feminine (lovely, shiny and shaped), therefore it is described differently). Folkway: etiquette, least important, evokes least amount of punishment (ex. A lady sitting with her legs wide open) Mores: essential, core norms for survival. (ex. Taboos: causes revulsion and severe punishment (ex. Ethnocentrism: judging another culture based on the standards of your own.
