Race is a social construct used to distinguish people in terms of one or more physical markers, usually with profound effects on their lives. Ethnicity is perceived cultural markers that are deemed socially significant. Ethnic groups differ in terms of language, religion, customs, values, ancestors, etc. Development of racial and ethnic labels and identity is a process of negotiation. Different native tribes represent different languages and practices, but when the europeans tried to colonize their land, they applied the label indian to them.
