SOC205H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Social Disorganization Theory, Scientific Method, Ritualism In The Church Of England
Document Summary
This is still positivist so it still is interested in scientific method and empirical methods, and it is still interested in the cause of crimes and why people commit crime. However we look away from individual-based explanations and look at the role of the social context to explain why some individuals commit crime. We are contributing to this ongoing debate between nature (you"re born with it) vs. nurture (you"re born into it through environment). Occurred once again through massive population growth and urbanization. Additionally, chicago had a relatively unique sociologist department which was really interested in the overall environment. We also have a changing view of poverty. People have a more forgiving attitude towards poverty since they lived and experienced poverty and suffered themselves throughout the great depression; people started to be less judgemental and more sensitive. They were also more interested in a government whom fixed problems.
