Document Summary
You do something bad, you get punished for it (eye for an eye) You cause the death of someone, you die. Certainty: if it was easier to catch people. people would be less likely to commit a crime. Severity: doesn"t deter crime or decrease crime rates. Celerity: speed with which you are punished. ^ you need to catch the person in action for it to have a psychological effect on them. Speed matter like when you catch a child stealing a cookie while it happens vs. a day after. General deterrence: if someone commits a crime, you"ve seen that person go through the punishment and are therefore deterred. Less effective on people who have nothing to lose. Specific deterrence: individual doesn"t commit crime after committing it once. Canada"s version is prison deprive them of liberty. Symbolic: abstract, our measure of pain is time (sentencing) rather than eye for an eye. Address underlying causes facing the offender are addressed.
