Document Summary

Correctional guard was killed at the prison prior to the scene. Try to provoke inmates to fight and they prevent them from any special privileges (like using the bathroom) They also did inhumane forms of punishment on them, such as preventing them from sleeping and then forcing them to do work. The other ppl tried to silently protest to get the guard to resign but he called back up and one inmate eventually died bc a guard was sitting on her. Gladiator fights: fights that guards start between inmates and if they don"t want to fight the inmates are shot dead, the guards placed bets on the fights too. Guards are routinely exposed to external society and can therefore mitigate debilitating effects of prison. Prison is a stable job or a stepping-stone to a further career in criminal justice. Guard subculture is a product of a complex interaction of importation, socialization, deportation, and cultural evolution .
