SOC216H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Complex Differential Form, Rationality, None Of The Above
Document Summary
In modern capitalist societies, rationality permeates all realms of human activity (tradition, religion, emotion) and displaces those factors as a primary motivator for human behavior. Modern law is driven by logic and human calculation, rather than by irrational forces like tradition and emotion. In the process of rationalization, law also becomes more functionally insulated from other institutions such as religion or politics. Rationality is not a property of individuals, but of social order. Rationality is thinking like this; people will do a reading in school, because a reading will allow them to boost their marks, and this will increase their likelihood of getting into law school. The end goal is to be a lawyer, but people do this to achieve a desired result. Capitalism is a rational economic system because it compels people to think long term about the probable outcomes of their acts.
