Lawyers and the sociology of law: weber: the legal profession is indispensable to the legal order as we know it in modern. Western societies: why are lawyers important, roles they play as lawyers: defense lawyers, prosecutors, corporate lawyers. In house counsel: lawyers for cooperation, these lawyers consult with the corporation. What is inside counsel: in house counsel increased because corporations realized they were spending too much money on lawyers. Canada: number of firms have grown over time, firms over 100 lawyers, 1980= 1 firm, 1989= 19 firms, 2016= 33 firms. Cravath system: cravath lawyers came up with an idea, hire lawyers only from prestigious law schools (only higher insiders, hired associates from prestigious law schools. But profitability depends on maintaining a high ratio of associates to partners (sutton 266: women are not making partners, women are present in half of law students and associates but only a small amount make it to partners.
