Sociology of law september 22 week 3. Vagrancy: roaming around from place to place without a job or resources. Panhandling: begging for money or food in public places. Economic organization shapes what law looks like: capitalism in canada, economy is base and rest is superstructure, capitalism creates class stratification class division, small class of wealth owners and larger class of workers. Law benefits the wealthy: encourage profit making for already wealthy, governments, media, educations, all kinds of social institution are oriented towards the wealthy. Chambliss and marx: changes in social structure in england over time drove creation of vagrancy laws. Redevelopment of disinvested areas and the displacement of current residents whom are typically poor, minority, refugees, etc. Law can help gentrification: ordinances that encourage condominium development, loitering and panhandling laws. Marx would say all these laws are to criminalize begging and protect the wealthy.
