Women as Other — Gender Stereotypes
-Stereotypes where we group things together and draw from them when we need quick source
to go to
-some people fit the stereotypes but these stereotypes are made for an entire group which is not
right
-historically concept of women being subordinate and passive also applied to men of colour,
only middle class white men were the real standard
-women are still expected to be passive and subordinate
-women threaten the social order, in addition to being passive and subordinate there is also the
this stereotype that women are caregivers and nurturers so when they commit crimes it goes
against those expectations
-fallen women — women that fell off track
Women as Sad, Bad, or Mad
Women Offenders As Sad
-Women were characterized by early criminologists as spiteful
-feminist today still consider women violence from personal and social oppression
-childhood events lead women to commit crime
-more negative impressions when describing women of colour
-describing women as sad evokes sympathy
-we should treat women with some lenience

in media there was this thing going around that Martha was just following raymonds orders that
she was just this lost puppy in love and it was all raymonds idea
-Bonnie and Claide were another famous couple who committed crimes and it was said
that Claide followed in Bonnies choices cause she was so in love with him
