SOC224H5 Lecture 4: SOC224 Lecture 4
Document Summary
Reproducing docile workers, children are being brainwashed. Marx was obsessed with capitalism (proletariat vs bourgeoisie) Children don"t protest of stand against it because they"ve been produced to become docile - when you"re being treated in school, you"re being motivated to become a labor worker. Hidden curriculum: socialize into subordinate positions (poor) or socialize into power (privileged) Example: rewarded for following instructions, training to follow orders. Bowles and gintis: the education-workplace fit (schooling in capitalist america) Correspondence principle - school hierarchies correspond to workplace hierarchies. Relationship between what happens in labour market and schools is parallel. Students are being prepared for particular role in workplace. Schools end up producing workers that remain underprivileged and docile. Different schools in different neighborhoods where wealthier schools provide a better education and so middle class children remain middle class but higher class people get better education and so become more sucessful and work in higher levels.
