Need certain level of education, even for manual labor jobs. Women are doing better than men in getting jobs and earning money: women try harder, pay more attention, get more education, women go into service-sector (white collar) jobs. Less affected by technology; more likely to be better off. Our occupations define us and help us to fit into society: people who don"t have jobs fit in through other ways (gangs, drugs, etc. ) Paid work: occupation that involves earning money for doing a job. Unpaid work: looking after household, relatives, children, volunteering, subsistence work (hunting, fishing, farming, etc. ) Focus on 15 years old and above arbitrarily defined as adults, ready for work. Employed: those involved in paid work earning wages for doing jobs. Unemployed: don"t have a job but actively looking for work or waiting for work. Inactive: not employed and not looking for work; consists of everyone else.
