Document Summary
In a pure open system the word class wouldn"t even exist. Social mobility: movement of people up and down in a stratified system. Social reproduction: tendency for people to remain in their social classes. Equal opportunity is the goal we work towards. Birth and social positioning determines our life chance. Circular mobility: the circular movement of people (up down and up again) People being promoted and other demoted down (circular movement) Structural mobility: shifts in the economy which allow for greater movement of people (either up or down) It allowed for people to get jobs after ww2. Reproductive mobility: those at the bottom have more children than the top. If the lower class has many children, there"s a chance that 1 of them might make it out of their positioning. Immigration mobility: a system that is open to new comers. Example - immigrants and immigrant tensions between long standing groups and newer immigrants groups in miami.
