Gender is a situated accomplishment, as much an aspect of interaction as it is of identity: we do gender not in a genderless vacuum, but rather in a gendered world, in gendered instit. Gender is a routine accomplishment embedded in everyday interaction: when we do gender we are seen and judged by others. In other words, we are accountable for our gender performances: there are costs to doing gender differently.
