SOC326H5 Lecture 2: Week 2 - Jan. 12, 2017
Document Summary
The main thing to focus on are either use of force or morality and social values. Max weber (1864-1920): known for bureaucratization (rationalization), religion, science and politics. The reason why it"s different is because of a specific set of values that came about (protestantism). The idea behind the religion is not work for yourself, but working to accumulate. You need to work and save money for the system. He never talked about the police specifically but talked about the role of the state is to maintain order of everyday affairs and has the capacity to make people do what it wants. They do this through the monopoly of violence. The author sees weber"s view as dangerous and pessimistic. Weber says good police need to have passion as well as a feeling of responsibility because police have this monopoly of violence and easily abuse it otherwise. Also needed is a sense of proportion (is the crime worth the time).
