SOC326H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Dialectic, Scantron Corporation, Erving Goffman
Document Summary
Will be discussed at the end of the lecture. For the next 2 weeks we cover authority and different models of policing. After the midterm, the course will become more practical. This week we look at the internal structure of the police. Sees police as a very well defined bureaucratic organization. It is why citizens can respect and trust the police. Main argument is that police neutrality is needed. This is purely a result of internal factors of policing (3 factors on the slide) Broad argument is that police maintain authority through their structure. It"s a vertical hierarchy (in terms of who gives commands and who obeys them) Within this system, control and tracking subordinates is important (quasi-military) So that they know policing is occurring the way it should. What they mean by dialectic phenomena of police abruptly being introduced to protect an area and then gradually spreading. Really allowed police to expand their jurisdictions.
