We have seen that there are almost as many women as there are men with paying jobs, and the gap between their participation rates have been decreasing. However we see that not only are men and women doing different work, but that women"s work generally hold less prestige and authority. They are segregated (separated) into different occupations based on jobs that are considered appropriate for the given gender, and this is known as occupational segregation. Occupations are a broad category of the work people do, or are capable of doing. This means that you can have an occupation even if you are currently unemployed.
