Document Summary

The great stall: a stop in the participation rate of women in the labor force. Girls are told they can be anything they want, but when older, few women rise above. Some women are made sole caregivers and breadwinners for their families: they don"t get early education, daycare, afterschool programs, paid leave, etc. Mothers are forced to use unreliable networks of caregivers that reduce ability to do jobs. Women are mothers, and this has an impact on their abilities and career paths. Three criteria for explanation of gender discrimination: Has to tell us why gender discrimination exists. Has to tell us why there"s variation; more/less gender discrimination in certain places. Has to tell us a remedy to reduce/erase gender discrimination. Root causes: the original, underlying causes: biology: women have children while men don"t have to, social culture: affects how women are socialized and perceived. Explanation: gender discrimination exists because men are bigger and stronger.
