Same as collins- dow and controlling images. Dow looks at how black families, particularly middle-class mothers and how they deal with controlling images. Image of the thug: negative stereotypes that have been affecting north america. No resources, not a lot of room for negotiation, consciously challenge stereotypes. Middle-class mothers have more resources, conscious of what kind of mothering work they need to do to protect their sons from image of the thug, how they can really copulate the son"s habitus. Even when conscious it"s not enough, cannot change whole society, still do it to change society and also protect sons in intimate space of family. Not all black men deal with controlling image in same way. If you live in gated community, this will protect more than if you live in poorer neighbourhood. If you live in those types of neighbourhoods, the type of control mechanism that effects marginalized men.
