SOC425H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Asian Americans, Hijab, Infertility
Document Summary
She compares the regulations of adolescent sexuality in american & dutch families. In-depth interviews with 14 american parents + 16 dutch parents: all white + well-educated + middle-class. Lived near a university town and a metropolitan area. Even though the respondents come from the same demo-graphic backgrounds, but have different attitudes and strategies towards their adolescent sexuality. Examines it through a comparative framework she compares two western industrial modern countries, to show that there is so much variation within the west. We tend to generalize modern western countries as if they are the same. There so much variation between class, race, ethnicity, etc. , within each country. She does not want to compare apples and oranges, but more specifically towards one type of demography. Since these two groups are so dominant on defining the nationality it is important to see how they define adolescent sexuality. Teach us about cultures and variations that exist within the west.
