Before the renaissance: during the renaissance, people painted other people flat, renaissance period roughly 1400-1550- beginning of the renaissance, art changed a lot during the early renaissance period. Medieval european painting: focused on religious subjects, they lacked perspective- paintings appear flat. Painters in italy and across europe painted holy trinity, christ, mary (key religious figures). Renaissance changed perspective: shadows and light of bodies and how they appeared in space. Perspective and human forms: anatomically correct physiology, human expressions began to look more realistic- human features in paintings provided perspectives due to the use of light and shadow. Mona lisa: what is the big deal behind mona lisa painting, mona lisa is a half length portrait. Ordinary woman - not royal subject, but from a wealthy silk merchant family. Large scale backdrop gives it a mythical quality: her ambiguous smile.
