Vcc236 week 2 lecture notes (summary/main topic points): Cities: gas lighting made it possible for people to stay out late. A language of consumerism: who is pursuing, purchasing or using commodities. Prisoners know they are being watched by people above them, which creates power. You"d act a little more free when you"re unaware that you"re being watched. Being watched makes you readjust how you behave. Example: security guard at a store, watches you, which makes you uncomfortable. First model that starts to regulate human behaviour. Malls are designed as a modern day panopticon --it"s open and free, but someone is watching. Expanded the idea of the panoramic vision. About light and movement, relation between the viewer. Images moving while spectator is sitting in one place. Collective experiences: to be with strangers & experience something together. How modern art is a break in aesthetic. Modern/abstract art is meant to make you feel uncomfortable. Authenticity that is given to products by advertising.
