You are free to go out and purchase what you want when you want instead of being at work and feeling confined. People started to become aware of this marketing scheme as the decades passed. People began to resist the idea that they needed to find reward through consumption. Needed to move away from this line of advertising. Alienation as a new sign- a status symbol for nostalgia or humor. Using humor makes it harder to see your alienation because of the joke.
