Audre lorde: the erotic is a resource within each of us that lies in a deeply female and spiritual plane firmly rooted in the power of our unexpressed or unrecognized feeling. pg. As women we have been told that the erotic is bad and must be suppressed. Sexual desire in women has been considered dangerous throughout history. The erotic & the sexual body belongs with a men; it can not be a body for itself. The superficial erotic has been encouraged which serves to objectify women as sexual objects of men. "superficial erotic" is pointing to pornography; she is saying there is a hegemonic erotica but there are many different kinds of erotica. Lorde writes the erotic has often been misnamed by men and used against women. It has been made into the confused, the trivial, the psychotic, the plasticized sensation.
