Document Summary

Judith butler (my own notes, not from powerpoint): The way feminism has been organized around particular ideas of women. The way discourse is organized, it shapes and makes visible a certain kind of. This is due to how discourse is produced through a kind of. There are multiple bodies across multiple sites coming into reality through discourse. There is nothing that predates discourse for butler. What is understood as the body becomes foundational. The model we make of the body hardens around other discourses; how we understand women affects also what we believe a woman is socially, politically, culturally, etc. The way feminism functions is particularly important in representation: allowing for legitimacy. These models have been challenged; feminists globally challenge the idea. Using gender and feminism, equality issues around men and women; using feminism as representational to have our issues acknowledged. Feminism, the representation it provides, is not global, and can be challenged!
